Ammonites were shelled marine creatures called cephalopods that died out about 66 million years ago. In order to be fossilised, a dead ammonite would settle into the seabed, where it would be buried by sediment. Various chemical processes would then be involved in the formation of a fossil from the ammonite’s shell. Some ammonite fossils bear intricate patterned details on their outer surface called sutures, which mark where the walls of the chambers meet the outer wall of the ammonite shell.
